Custom Regulations - Peru
General Information

The following items are not to be considered as baggage or household goods: automobiles, recreational vehicles, trailers, pleasure boats or crafts, airplanes, weapons, seed, plants, historical, archeological or cultural articles of the Nation.

It is indispensable the arrival of the owner in the country, to obtain his passport stamped by the Immigration Department, and will be presented to the customs authorities.

The customer must credit a residence outside of the country, non less of nine months consecutives.

The household goods may arrive in Peru, up to four months after the arrival of the customer.

The shipments belonging to Peruvian diplomats are not exempt of the customs physical inspection.

Required Documents

  • Diplomatic Shipments

For Foreign and Peruvian diplomats, it is recommended that the member obtain the customs franchise, before the shipment arrives. This franchise is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

The customs franchise is granted for the importation of single items. In case of duplicate items, these will pay a 20% normal tax.

For Peruvian Diplomats

a)  Original passport.

b)  The Exemption Franchise.

c)  The list of the household goods in Spanish.

d)  Letter of authorization to the concerning customs office (the local agent will furnish the form).

e)  Bill of lading or AWB  endorsed by the diplomatic.

For Foreigners Diplomats:

a)  Original passport.

b)  The Exemption Franchise.

c)  The list of the household goods in Spanish.

d)  Letter of authorization to the concerning customs office (the local agent will furnish the form).

e)  Bill of lading or AWB  endorsed by the diplomatic.

Time of the Dispatch:

Via Air: For Peruvian Diplomats: 4 working days and for Foreign Diplomats: 3 working days, counted from the reception of the requested documents.

Via Ocean:  For Peruvian Diplomats: 5 working days and for Foreign Diplomats: 3 working days.

Duties:  No pay taxes.

  • Non Citizen Shipments

To obtain the benefits of the regulations regarding the importation of household goods, the foreign citizens must acquire the non-immigrant resident visa.

Customs will allow the clearance of the household goods with a notarized copy of the Employment contract between the customer and his Company in Peru and authenticated by the Ministry of Work in case the customer has not received the immigrant visa when the shipments arrive.

If the requirements mentioned above are not met, the shipment of household goods will pay a 20% tax on the reference value of the items, taking into consideration that only one item of each kind is permitted.

If more than one item is imported (example: 2 television sets) the tax to pay will be 32.16% for the extra item.

If the customer arrives in Peru with a businessman visa, his household goods may be imported, as long as a guaranty from his company and a sworn declaration by the customer are presented (the local agent will supply the forms).  In this case the duties will be 32.16%.

There is no exception regarding the physical customs inspection.

Required Documents:  

a)  Original of the passport.

b)  Letter of authorization to the concerning customs office (the local agent will supply the forms).

c)  Resident visa or employment contract.

d)  Inventory list in Spanish.

e)  Bill of lading or AWB endorsed by the customer. Copy of two B/Līs.

Time of the DispatchVia air: 5 working days. Via ocean: 7 working days.

Duties:  20% tax.

  • Returning Citizens

To obtain the benefits of the regulations regarding the importation of household goods, the Peruvians, citizen must have been residing abroad for an uninterrupted period of 9 consecutive months.

The residence must be proven to the customs authorities in Peru, with his original passport and proof of residence issued by the Peruvian Consul at origin.

If the requirements mentioned above are not met, the shipment of household goods will pay a 20% tax on the reference value of the items, and taking into consideration that only one item of each kind is permitted.

If more than one item is imported (example: 2 television sets) the tax to pay will be 32.16% for the extra item.

If the requirements mentioned in paragraphs 1 and 2 of this item are not met, the household goods may be imported if the customer presents an explanatory sworn declaration and the payment of customs duties of 32.16%.

The household goods belonging to Peruvian citizen's deceased abroad may be imported into the country by his widow, children or parents residing in Peru, that has a proof of their right to such goods. The importation will enter the country duty free with the authorization of the National Customs Superintendent.

The Peruvian citizen that exported his household goods out of the country may reenter them into Peru duty free, after presenting to the customs the exportation documents, certified by the Customs authorities.

Required Documents:

a)  Original of the passport.

b)  Proof of residence.

c)  Inventory list of the goods.

d)  Letter of authorization to the concerning customs office (the local agent in Peru will supply the form).

e)  Bill of lading or AWB endorsed by the client.  Copy of 2 B/Līs.

Time of the DispatchVia air: 5 working days. Via ocean: 7 working days.

Duties:  20% Tax.

Automobiles

The importation of new automobiles is permitted, after paying taxes of 45.38% of their value.

The importation of automobiles with five years of use is permitted, after paying taxes of 71.81% of their value.

The returning Peruvian diplomats after their tour of duty abroad may import one 2000 cc. automobile duty free, after obtaining the customs franchise before the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Peruvian diplomats and foreigners that are exonerated of taxes, they do not require Certificate of Inspection. 

Required Documents:

a)  Certificate of inspection (SGS, Bureau Veritas).

b)  Commercial invoice (original), where appear clearly the number of motor.

c)  Copy of the passport.

d)  Bill of lading or AWB, endorsed by the client.  Copy of 2 B/Līs.

e)  Copy of the electoral identification (for Peruvian citizens).

f)  The exemption franchise (Diplomatic, Peruvian and Foreigner)

Time of the DispatchVia air: 3 working days. Via ocean: 4 working days.

Note:  If the automobile arrives in a same container with the household goods, the time of dispatch will be between 7 and 8 days approximately.  The weight of the household goods and automobile, must detailed separately in the body of bill of lading 

Important:  The consignment must be at the name of the customer. The port charges are determined according with the customs warehouse at the point of arrival or the cargo. Before the shipment arrives in Peru, the agent must have all the shipping details to coordinate with the customer and avoid additional costs in storage or demurrage.

Duties:  Diplomatic members duty free.

Way to Brief Load:  Name of the customer, as it appears in the passport (please do not use diminutive, c/o moving company name, city and country).

Pets

It is recommended that the pet is shipped as part of the passenger’s baggage, and that all necessary documents are attached to the airway bill to present to the Peruvian customs authorities at the moment of the arrival.

Required Documents:

Health and vaccination certificate issued by the proper authorities.

If the pet arrives in Peru as cargo, a customs clearance must be effected immediately.  Therefore, all the certificates mentioned above must be at hand, plus the airway bill and all shipping details of the arrival of the pet in Peru.

Prohibited Articles

Drugs, narcotics, firearms, telecommunication equipments. (In the case of firearms or telecommunication equipment, these items may be imported through a special license granted by the local authorities, before the shipment arrives).
